Exercise Physiology for Depression & Anxiety

Exercise physiology as part of mental health treatment in Geelong. Accredited Exercise Physiologists working with depression, anxiety and PTSD. Medicare and NDIS funding available.

Exercise is one of the most evidence-based treatments for mental health. We take that seriously.

The relationship between physical activity and mental health is well-established in the research, and it goes well beyond exercise making you feel good. Structured, prescribed exercise has measurable effects on depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions. At Core Health Group, we provide a safe, non-judgmental environment where you can engage with exercise at your own pace, supported by clinicians who understand both the physical and psychological dimensions of what you’re managing.

How exercise physiology helps with depression and anxiety

Exercise influences mood, anxiety, and cognitive function through multiple pathways, including changes in brain chemistry, reduced inflammation, improvements in sleep quality, and increases in self-efficacy.

For people with depression, research shows that regular exercise can be as effective as antidepressant medication for mild to moderate symptoms.

For anxiety, aerobic exercise reduces physiological arousal and improves the body’s ability to regulate stress responses.

We understand that getting started is often the hardest part. Our approach is low-pressure, flexible, and built around what you can actually manage right now. There’s no expectation that you arrive ready to go hard.

A note on funding

Who is this for?

People in Geelong managing depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other mental health conditions who want to use exercise as part of their treatment. This works alongside medication and psychological support, not as a replacement for them. It’s particularly well-suited for people who’ve been told exercise would help but haven’t known how to start, people who feel intimidated by gyms, and those who’ve had mental health setbacks that have affected their physical fitness.

Exercise physiology for mental health can be funded through Medicare CDM plans where there’s an associated chronic physical condition. NDIS participants with psychosocial disability may be eligible depending on their plan and goals. DVA clients, including veterans managing PTSD or depression, are covered for exercise physiology under Gold and White cards. We’re experienced in supporting DVA clients and understand the specific needs of this group.
