Exercise Physiology for Osteoarthritis

Reduce pain and improve joint function with exercise physiology for osteoarthritis in Geelong.

Accredited Exercise Physiologists, Medicare rebates and DVA funding available.

Sore joints don’t mean you have to stop moving. In

fact, the opposite is true.

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common conditions we see at Core Health Group, and one

of the most responsive to exercise. If your hips, knees, hands, or back are painful and stiff, it

can feel like movement makes things worse. But the evidence is clear: the right exercise,

prescribed by someone who understands the condition, reduces pain, improves joint

function, and slows progression.

How exercise physiology helps with osteoarthritis

Exercise works for osteoarthritis by strengthening the muscles that support affected joints, reducing load through the joint during daily activities, and improving cartilage health through movement. It also has powerful effects on pain perception. Regular exercise genuinely changes the way your nervous system processes pain signals.

The key is prescription.

Too much of the wrong exercise can flare symptoms. Too little achieves nothing. Our exercise physiologists find that middle ground for you and adjust your program as your capacity improves.

What your program may involve

• A functional movement assessment to understand which joints are affected and how

• Low-impact aerobic exercise such as cycling, pool walking, or rowing

• Targeted resistance training to build support around affected joints

• Flexibility and mobility work

• Advice on activity modification for daily life and work

• Regular reviews to progress your program as you improve

Who this is for

Anyone in Geelong living with osteoarthritis in any joint, particularly the knee, hip, lower back, or shoulder. This is for people who’ve been told they have arthritis and aren’t sure where to start, people who’ve had joint replacements and want to recover well, and people managing significant daily pain who want a structured way to improve their quality of life.

A note on funding

Osteoarthritis is one of the conditions most commonly referred under Medicare CDM plans, with up to 5 subsidised sessions per year available. DVA card holders are covered for exercise physiology. NDIS participants may be eligible depending on how their condition affects their functional capacity. If you’re unsure, contact us and we’ll help you work it out.
